Get Set Kids was started in 2009 by Ally Mendelsohn and Emma Ord, two mums from Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham who have been friends since their eldest boys started pre-school together.
They decided to start the magazine and web site over a coffee and cake shortly after having their two youngest children to provide a real community read and saw it as being an extension of the school gates chat amongst parents which many now miss out on because of work commitments etc.
The magazine/web site aims to bring features that parents with young families will find interesting and informative and includes many local venues, clubs, classes etc that have been tried, tested and recommended by families. Ally and Emma are really proud of what they’ve achieved over the last few years, especially winning a Star Radio business award and getting interviews from celebrities including Jamie Oliver, Olly Murs and the coaches from BBC’s The Voice. They are also particularly proud of the money they have raised for local children’s charity Cash for Kids with their Girls Night In, not a bad achievement for a lifestyle business run by two mums with very busy lives and other jobs!
Recently, the magazine advertising and distribution has been taken over by K&M, the print/design team who have printed the publication over the last four years but Ally will still be helping out on the editorial and events side of the business.
Testimonials for Get Set Kids
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to add a little testimonial about Get Set Kids. I have advertised with the magazine since the very first edition, both as a former Socatots franchisee and in my current incarnation as a Zumba instructor. Ally and Emma are ultra-professional but understand the pressures of being a working Mum and I have found their flexibility to hold our meetings at playgroup and soft play most refreshing. The design and quality of the magazine is uncompromised and I always know when an issue has gone to print as my phone never stops ringing. In short, I’d highly recommend GSK as an amazing form of targeted advertising Jaime Hume
Dear Get Set Kids
Many thanks for your recommendation to visit Crook Hall. We were visitors to the area and were looking for inspiration for a family afternoon out and found your magazine packed with ideas. We chose to go to Crook Hall on the strength of your feature and we were not disappointed. We spent the whole afternoon exploring the different sections of the garden and looking for all the works of art from local artists. A wonderful family trip out – thank you for your recommendation.

“Working with Allison and Emma from Get Set Kids has been a great partnership. We are able to share and disseminate information through the Get Set kids magazine. It is so nice to work with Alison and Emma, they are two hard working mothers who want to share as much information with the community regarding what is available to children and their families. Keep up the good work”.

Katie Blundell, Marketing and Events Manager, Raby Estates
Its been great to work with Allison and Emma from Get Set Kids, they are two mums who really appreciate the market they are targeting and are always looking for different ways to promote local businesses and provide value for money advertising. I’ve found that the feature they did written from a mum’s perspective visiting with her kids has worked really well and would certainly recommend advertising in Get Set Kids to other local businesses.

I’ve had a quick look through your first edition, and I have to say I’m impressed! I think you’ve done a fantastic job and you’ve set yourself a really high standard to maintain for future issues. The quality of images used and variety of articles featured is first rate. The quality of the design, paper stock used, and printing is first-rate, the range and variety of advertisers included in the first publication was exceptional for a first print run. Many established publications would struggle to secure advertising from such a wide range of clients. The depth and variety of articles included clearly demonstrate that the publishers understand the market segment they are looking to service.
